Strainer (optional)
- 6 oz fresh apple cider preferably unfiltered for a richer flavor
- 1.5 oz whiskey bourbon or rye work beautifully
- 1 tablespoon honey local wildflower honey adds wonderful complexity
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 star anise pod
- 1 slice fresh apple for garnish
- 1 lemon wheel for garnish
Prepare your spices by gathering the cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise. Slightly crush the cinnamon stick by gently pressing with the flat side of a knife to release more flavor.
Pour the apple cider into a small saucepan and add the prepared spices. Heat over medium-low heat until the cider begins to steam—approximately 5-7 minutes. Avoid boiling, as this can diminish the fresh apple flavor.
While the cider heats, warm your serving mug by filling it with hot water. A pre-warmed mug helps maintain your drink's temperature longer. Discard the water just before filling with your hot toddy.
Once the cider is heated, remove from heat and stir in the honey and lemon juice until completely dissolved.
Pour the hot cider mixture into your warmed mug, straining out the whole spices if desired (though leaving them in continues to infuse flavor). Add the whiskey and stir gently to combine.
Garnish with a fresh apple slice, lemon wheel, and a cinnamon stick for presentation and aroma. Serve immediately while hot.
Possible Substitutions:
- Maple syrup or agave nectar can replace honey for a different sweetness profile
- Brandy or dark rum can substitute for whiskey if preferred
- Apple juice can work in place of cider, though you'll miss some depth of flavor
- Ground cinnamon (¼ teaspoon) can replace cinnamon sticks in a pinch
- For a non-alcoholic version, replace whiskey with apple juice and add ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Storage Tips:
- Spiced cider base (without alcohol) can be prepared in larger batches and refrigerated for up to 3 days
- For gatherings, keep the spiced cider warm in a slow cooker on the lowest setting
