Ingredients

  • 2 cans apple pie filling 21 oz each
  • 1 box yellow cake mix 15.25 oz
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted (1 stick)

Optional Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon optional
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg optional
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract optional
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Spread both cans of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of your prepared baking dish. If using optional cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla, fold them into the apple mixture.
  • Evenly distribute the dry cake mix powder over the apple layer. Do not mix it in.
  • If adding nuts, sprinkle them over the cake mix layer.
  • Pour the melted butter evenly over the cake mix layer, trying to cover as much of the dry mix as possible using a zigzag pattern.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.
  • Allow the cake to rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

- You can use homemade apple pie filling (about 4 cups) or 6 cups of fresh apples tossed with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon instead of canned filling.
- White cake mix, spice cake mix, or gluten-free cake mix all work wonderfully as substitutes for yellow cake mix.
- For a dairy-free option, use coconut oil or a plant-based butter alternative.
- For best results, choose a glass or ceramic baking dish rather than metal for more even heating.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, drizzle with caramel sauce, or add whipped cream.
