Wooden Spoon
Pitcher
- 2 green tea bags preferably organic
- 1 cup fresh blueberries frozen will work too
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup optional, adjust to taste
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- ice cubes for serving iced
- fresh mint leaves optional, for garnish
Rinse the blueberries thoroughly under cold water. In a medium saucepan, add the blueberries with 1 cup of water. Using the back of a wooden spoon, gently crush about half of the berries to release their juices while leaving some whole for texture and visual appeal.
Bring the blueberry mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 5 minutes until the berries have softened and released their color.
While the blueberry mixture is simmering, bring the remaining 3 cups of water to just below boiling (about 175°F/80°C). Remove from heat and add the green tea bags. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes, then remove the tea bags.
Pour the brewed green tea into the blueberry mixture and stir gently. Add honey or maple syrup if desired, along with the fresh lemon juice.
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher, pressing gently on the blueberries to extract maximum flavor. For hot tea, serve immediately. For iced tea, refrigerate until thoroughly chilled (about 30 minutes).
Pour into glasses filled with ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves and a few whole blueberries.
For a caffeine-free version, use decaffeinated green tea.
Replace honey with agave nectar for a vegan option.
Try blackberries or mixed berries for a different flavor profile.
Store in a glass container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
The lemon juice not only brightens the flavor but also helps preserve the vibrant color.
