Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Heat-resistant glasses or mugs

Ingredients

Cocktail Base

  • 2 cups apple cider unfiltered gives the best flavor profile
  • 4 oz bourbon whiskey mid-range quality like Buffalo Trace or Maker's Mark
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup optional, for added sweetness

Spices

  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg

Garnish

  • apple slices for garnish
  • additional cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions

  • Toast your cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise in a dry saucepan for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Pour the apple cider into the saucepan with the toasted spices. Heat gently over medium-low heat until steam begins to rise—about 5 minutes. Avoid boiling.
  • If using maple syrup, add it now and stir until completely dissolved.
  • Take the saucepan off the heat and let the spices infuse for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the bourbon and lemon juice after removing from heat.
  • If serving hot, strain into heat-resistant mugs or glasses. For a cold version, strain into a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, then serve over ice.
  • Garnish each serving with a fresh apple slice and cinnamon stick. For an extra touch, dust with freshly grated nutmeg right before serving.

Notes

The warm version of this cocktail comes together quickly, making it perfect for impromptu gatherings. The spiced cider base (without bourbon) can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
For a non-alcoholic version, replace bourbon with additional cider and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Rye whiskey offers a spicier profile, while Irish whiskey provides a smoother finish as alternatives to bourbon.
