Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Serving Platter
  • Paper Towels
  • Saucepan (if making homemade caramel)

Ingredients

Apple Base

  • 4-5 large apples Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup water for lemon water solution

Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup store-bought caramel sauce OR homemade caramel
  • 1 cup sugar for homemade caramel
  • 1/4 cup water for homemade caramel
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream for homemade caramel
  • 4 tablespoons butter for homemade caramel
  • 1 pinch salt for homemade caramel

Toppings (Choose Your Favorites)

  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts walnuts, pecans, or peanuts
  • 1/4 cup toffee bits
  • 1/4 cup mini M&Ms
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup crushed pretzels
  • 2 tablespoons sprinkles
  • 1/4 cup mini marshmallows
  • chocolate sauce for drizzling (optional)
  • white chocolate melted, for drizzling (optional)
  • peanut butter melted, for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  • Fill a large bowl with cool water and add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. This acidic solution prevents your apple slices from browning too quickly.
  • Core and slice your apples into ¼-inch thick wedges. For maximum visual appeal, use a mix of different apple varieties. Immediately place the slices in your prepared lemon water and let them soak for 2-3 minutes.
  • If using store-bought caramel, warm it slightly in the microwave for 20-30 seconds until it reaches a pourable consistency.
For homemade caramel, combine sugar and water in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Allow it to simmer undisturbed until it turns amber (about 8-10 minutes). Remove from heat, carefully add cream and butter (mixture will bubble vigorously), then stir until smooth. Add a pinch of salt if desired.
  • Drain your apple slices and pat them dry with paper towels. Arrange them in an overlapping pattern on a large serving platter, creating a "nacho-like" base. For the most visually appealing presentation, create a circular pattern starting from the outside and working your way in.
  • Pour the warm caramel sauce generously over your apple slices. Use a back-and-forth motion to ensure even distribution. Leave some apple edges visible for easier grabbing and a more attractive presentation.
  • Sprinkle your chosen toppings over the caramel-covered apples. Create sections of different toppings to accommodate various preferences, or mix them all together for a more rustic look.
  • Add additional caramel drizzles over the top for that picture-perfect finishing touch. For extra decadence, drizzle with melted chocolate or peanut butter in decorative patterns.

Notes

- For best results, serve within 2 hours of assembly for optimal freshness
- This dessert is best enjoyed fresh, as the apples will soften and the caramel will harden over time
- For a healthier option, try using plain Greek yogurt drizzled with honey instead of caramel
- Make it vegan by using a coconut cream-based caramel and plant-based toppings
- To prevent browning for longer periods, brush apple slices with a mixture of honey and water (3 parts water to 1 part honey)
