Equipment

  • Crockpot/Slow Cooker

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 packages (14 oz each) little smokies or cocktail wieners
  • 1 can (12 oz) Dr. Pepper soda regular, not diet
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce sweet and smoky variety works best
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat

For Thickening

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water for cornstarch slurry

Instructions

  • Spray your slow cooker lightly with non-stick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner. A 3-4 quart crockpot works perfectly for this recipe.
  • Pour the Dr. Pepper into your crockpot, then add the barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Whisk together until the ingredients are fully incorporated.
  • Open and drain the packages of little smokies to remove excess liquid. Add them to the crockpot and gently stir to coat all the sausages with the sauce mixture.
  • Cover and cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or on LOW for 4-5 hours. Stir occasionally during cooking to ensure even glazing.
  • About 30 minutes before serving, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir this into the crockpot and leave the lid slightly ajar.
  • Continue cooking for 30 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken into a glossy, clingy glaze that perfectly coats each little smokie.
  • Serve warm with decorative toothpicks for easy grabbing at parties.

Notes

Root beer or cola can replace Dr. Pepper

For a spicier version, add 1 tablespoon of sriracha or hot sauce
Turkey or chicken sausages work well for a leaner option
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days
Can be frozen for up to 2 months
