Equipment

  • Slow Cooker/Crockpot
  • Broiler or Oven
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 3-4 pounds pork baby back ribs membrane removed
  • 12 oz Dr. Pepper regular, not diet
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce smoky variety recommended
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs by sliding a knife under the thin film and pulling it off with a paper towel for grip. Cut the rack into sections that will fit comfortably in your crockpot.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together Dr. Pepper, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and all the spices until well combined.
  • Place the rib sections in your slow cooker, arranging them along the sides with the meaty side facing outward. Pour approximately 1/3 of the sauce mixture over the ribs, ensuring they're evenly coated.
  • Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.
  • Preheat your broiler. Carefully transfer the cooked ribs to a foil-lined baking sheet. Brush the ribs with additional sauce from the crockpot.
  • Broil for 3-5 minutes until the sauce caramelizes and bubbles.

Notes

Skipping membrane removal will result in tougher ribs.
For a different flavor profile, swap Dr. Pepper for Cherry Coke or Root Beer.
Extra sauce from the crockpot can be refrigerated separately and used as a delicious BBQ sauce for up to 1 week.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
