Equipment

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Paper Towels
  • Large Bowl

Ingredients

For the Apple Base

  • 4 large Granny Smith apples firm and tart varieties work best
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice prevents browning
  • 1 cup cold water

For the Caramel Dip

  • 14 oz soft caramels unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk for a lighter option
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt enhances the caramel flavor

Optional Toppings

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts pecans, peanuts, or walnuts
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup crushed cookies or graham crackers
  • sprinkles for festive occasions

Instructions

  • Fill a large bowl with cold water and add the lemon juice, stirring to combine. This acidulated water will keep your apple slices looking fresh and appetizing instead of turning brown.
  • Core your apples using an apple corer or small knife. Slice each apple into 8-10 even wedges. Immediately place the slices in the lemon water solution and let them soak for 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove the apple slices from the solution and pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels. Any moisture left on the slices will prevent the caramel from adhering properly.
  • In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the unwrapped caramels and heavy cream. Microwave on 50% power for 1 minute, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until completely smooth.
  • Once smooth, stir in the vanilla extract and sea salt, which elevates the caramel's flavor profile significantly.
  • Allow the caramel to cool slightly for about 2 minutes to achieve the perfect consistency for dipping.
  • Take each apple slice and dip one end into the caramel, covering approximately half the slice. Let excess caramel drip off for a moment, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • If using toppings, immediately sprinkle them over the caramel-covered portion while still tacky.
  • For quick serving, place the tray of dipped apple slices in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set the caramel.

Notes

For party presentation, arrange the apple slices in a fan pattern on your serving platter.
If preparing for a party, you can make these up to 24 hours in advance, keeping them refrigerated until about 30 minutes before serving for the best texture and flavor.
Use room temperature apples for better caramel adhesion.
For best results, aim for slices around ⅓-inch thick – thin enough to be bite-sized but thick enough to hold their shape when dipped.
