Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Wooden Popsicle Sticks
  • Microwave-safe bowl

Ingredients

For Caramel Apples

  • 6-8 medium apples Granny Smith recommended for tartness and firmness
  • 2 packages (11 oz each) Kraft caramels unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • wooden popsicle sticks or apple sticks

Optional Toppings

  • 1 cup chopped nuts pecans, peanuts, or almonds
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips or chocolate sprinkles
  • 1/2 cup crushed cookies or graham crackers
  • 1/4 cup flaky sea salt
  • colored sprinkles

Instructions

  • Wash your apples thoroughly to remove any wax coating or residue. Dry completely with a clean kitchen towel.
  • Insert wooden sticks about halfway into the stem end of each apple, making sure they're secure enough to support the weight of the caramel coating.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray lightly with cooking spray. If using toppings, place them in small bowls for easy access.
  • For best results, refrigerate your prepared apples for 30 minutes before dipping to help the caramel set faster.
  • Place unwrapped Kraft caramels and water in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on 50% power for 1 minute, then stir thoroughly. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until completely smooth.
  • Working quickly (but carefully), hold an apple by its stick and twist it in the melted caramel, coating it completely and allowing excess to drip back into the bowl.
  • If using toppings, immediately roll the caramel-covered apple in your chosen toppings while the caramel is still warm and tacky.
  • Place the dipped apples on your prepared baking sheet and allow them to set at room temperature for about an hour, or refrigerate for 30 minutes if you're in a hurry. The caramel should feel firm to the touch.

Notes

- For a dairy-free version, use plant-based caramels instead of Kraft
- If the caramel begins to thicken too much while dipping, reheat for 15-20 seconds and stir again
- For easier eating, slice apples into wedges just before serving
- Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 1 week
- If caramel is sliding off, ensure apples are completely dry before dipping
