Fourth of July Layered Drink
This visually striking and festive non-alcoholic beverage creates perfect red, white, and blue layers that won't mix, thanks to the science of liquid density. Unlike many holiday-themed drinks that rely on artificial colors, our Fourth of July Layered Drink uses natural ingredients to create those bold, patriotic layers while delivering refreshing flavors perfect for hot summer celebrations.

Blue Layer
- 1 cup blue sports drink like G2 or Powerade
- 1/4 cup ice cubes
- 2-3 drops natural blue food coloring optional, for deeper color
White Layer
- 1 cup coconut water
- 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup ice cubes
Red Layer
- 1 cup cranberry juice
- 2 tablespoons grenadine syrup
- 1/4 cup ice cubes
Measure all ingredients separately and ensure they're well-chilled. If possible, refrigerate your glasses for 10 minutes before starting.
Pour the blue sports drink into your chilled glass, filling approximately 1/3 of the glass. Add ice cubes to keep it cold. If you prefer a deeper blue, add a few drops of natural blue food coloring and stir gently.
In a separate container, mix coconut water, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until completely combined but avoid creating bubbles.
Place a spoon (back side up) against the inside of the glass, just above the blue layer. Slowly pour the white mixture over the back of the spoon to create the second layer.
Mix cranberry juice with grenadine syrup in a separate container.
Using the same back-of-spoon technique, carefully add the red layer on top. Pour even more slowly with this final layer to maintain distinct separation between layers.
For best visual impact, assemble these drinks just before serving. Each layer can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance and stored separately in sealed containers in the refrigerator. The drinks will maintain distinct layers for approximately 2 hours in the refrigerator before gradually beginning to blend.
For adult gatherings, these drinks can become "spiked" by adding vodka or white rum to the white layer (approximately 1.5 oz per serving).
