Equipment

  • Large Pitcher
  • Wine Glasses

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750ml) Italian red wine Chianti or Sangiovese recommended
  • 1/4 cup Aperol or Campari
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds
  • 1 lemon sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup cold sparkling water

Instructions

  • Pour the bottle of Italian red wine into a large pitcher. If the wine feels too warm, chill it for about 20 minutes before starting.
  • Add the 1/4 cup of Aperol or Campari to the wine.
  • Stir in the honey or agave syrup. Warm the honey slightly if it's too thick to blend easily.
  • Add the orange and lemon slices to the pitcher. Gently press the fruit slices with a wooden spoon to release some of their juices.
  • Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably 3 hours to allow flavors to meld.
  • Just before serving, add the cold sparkling water and stir gently to maintain carbonation. Serve over ice in wine glasses, making sure each glass gets some of the fruit slices.

Notes

For a lower sugar option, use stevia or monk fruit sweetener instead of honey. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute dealcoholized wine and alcohol-free Aperol alternative. The sangria base can be stored without the sparkling water for up to 48 hours in the refrigerator.
