Equipment

  • Wooden Skewers (6-8 inches long)
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 pre-cooked Italian meatballs beef, turkey, or plant-based
  • 1 French baguette or Italian bread loaf cut into 1-inch cubes (about 24 cubes)
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese cut into 12 small cubes
  • 1 cup marinara sauce for dipping
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 12 wooden skewers 6-8 inches long
  • fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the baguette or Italian bread into approximately 1-inch cubes. You'll need about 24 cubes total.
  • Place bread cubes on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Toss gently to coat.
  • Bake for 5-7 minutes until lightly golden and crisp on the outside but still soft inside.
  • If using frozen pre-cooked meatballs, warm them according to package instructions. For refrigerated meatballs, a quick 30-second microwave should suffice. Allow meatballs to cool slightly before assembly.
  • Cut your mozzarella into approximately 12 half-inch cubes.
  • Take each wooden skewer and thread on components in this order: bread cube, meatball, cheese cube, bread cube.
  • Warm your marinara sauce in a microwave-safe container until just heated through. Transfer to a small container with a tight-fitting lid for lunch boxes, or serve in small dipping bowls for immediate enjoyment.

Notes

- For make-ahead preparation, store all components separately and assemble just before serving.
- Assembled skewers can be refrigerated for up to 4 hours in an airtight container.
- For younger children, consider using shorter skewers with fewer items.
- Toasted bread reduces sogginess, keeping your skewers fresh for hours.
- If packing for lunch, include an ice pack to keep everything at food-safe temperatures.
