For the Pumpkin Butter Base

- 3 tablespoons pure pumpkin puree not pumpkin pie filling
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
For the Toppings
- 1/4 cup pecans toasted, roughly chopped
- 1/4 cup pepitas toasted (pumpkin seeds)
- 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
- 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup for drizzling
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage leaves thinly sliced
- 1 orange zest only
- flaky sea salt for sprinkling
For Serving
- assorted crackers water crackers, seeded crackers, whole grain crostini
- sliced apples and pears
- toasted baguette slices
In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, and sea salt. Use a hand mixer or wooden spoon to blend until completely smooth and no streaks remain. The mixture should be fluffy and well-incorporated.
Transfer the pumpkin butter mixture to a small container and refrigerate for about 20-30 minutes. You want it firm enough to spread but not completely hardened.
While the butter chills, select a serving board. Wood, marble, or slate all work beautifully. If using wood, consider lightly dampening it with a clean cloth to prevent the dry wood from absorbing moisture from the butter.
Remove the chilled pumpkin butter from the refrigerator. Using an offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the butter onto your serving board in artistic swirls and swoops. Create valleys and peaks for visual interest and to catch the toppings.
Artfully arrange your toppings across the butter spread. Scatter the toasted pecans, pepitas, and dried cranberries over the surface. Drizzle with honey or maple syrup, allowing it to pool in some of the valleys you've created. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves and sliced sage. Finish with orange zest and a light dusting of flaky sea salt.
Arrange crackers, bread slices, and fruit around the board. Let the butter board sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to fully develop and the butter to reach the perfect spreading consistency.
The pumpkin butter mixture can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Allow it to soften slightly before spreading on your board.
For a themed presentation, shape the butter roughly into a pumpkin outline before adding toppings.
For dairy-free needs: Use cultured vegan butter or coconut oil (solid form).
For nut allergies: Replace pecans with additional pepitas or sunflower seeds.
